J<\/span>ohn<\/span> A<\/span>ustin<\/span> intr<\/span>oduced<\/span> the<\/span> f<\/span>orm<\/span>ulation<\/span> \u2018perf<\/span>ormativ<\/span>e<\/span> utterance\u2019<\/span> in<\/span> his<\/span> 1962<\/span> book<\/span> Ho<\/span>w <\/span><\/span>to<\/span> Do<\/span> Things<\/span> with<\/span> W<\/span>or<\/span>ds<\/span>.<\/span> This<\/span> term<\/span> and<\/span> the<\/span> r<\/span>elated<\/span> concept<\/span> of<\/span> perf<\/span>ormativity<\/span> ha<\/span>v<\/span>e <\/span><\/span>subsequentl<\/span>y<\/span> been<\/span> interpr<\/span>eted<\/span> in<\/span> n<\/span>umer<\/span>ous<\/span> w<\/span>a<\/span>ys<\/span> b<\/span>y<\/span> social<\/span> scientists<\/span> and<\/span> philosopher<\/span>s such<\/span> as<\/span> L<\/span>y<\/span>otar<\/span>d,<\/span> Butler<\/span>,<\/span> Callon<\/span> and<\/span> Barad,<\/span> leading<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> coe<\/span>xistence<\/span> of<\/span> se<\/span>v<\/span>eral<\/span> f<\/span>oundational<\/span> per<\/span>spectiv<\/span>es<\/span> on<\/span> perf<\/span>ormativity<\/span>.<\/span> This<\/span> paper<\/span> r<\/span>e<\/span>vie<\/span>ws<\/span> and<\/span> e<\/span>v<\/span>aluates<\/span> criticall<\/span>y<\/span> ho<\/span>w org<\/span>anization<\/span> and<\/span> management<\/span> theory<\/span> (OMT)<\/span> scholars<\/span> ha<\/span>v<\/span>e<\/span> used<\/span> these<\/span> perspecti<\/span>v<\/span>es, and<\/span> ho<\/span>w<\/span> the<\/span> po<\/span>w<\/span>er<\/span> of<\/span> perf<\/span>ormativity<\/span> has,<\/span> or<\/span> has<\/span> not,<\/span> stimulated<\/span> ne<\/span>w<\/span> theory-b<\/span>uilding. In<\/span> perf<\/span>orming<\/span> a<\/span> historical<\/span> and<\/span> critical<\/span> r<\/span>e<\/span>vie<\/span>w<\/span> of<\/span> perf<\/span>ormativity<\/span> in<\/span> OMT<\/span>,<\/span> the<\/span> authors\u2019 anal<\/span>ysis<\/span> r<\/span>e<\/span>v<\/span>eals<\/span> the<\/span> uses,<\/span> ab<\/span>uses<\/span> and<\/span> under-uses<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> concept<\/span> b<\/span>y<\/span> OMT<\/span> scholars.<\/span> It also<\/span> r<\/span>e<\/span>v<\/span>eals<\/span> the<\/span> lack<\/span> of<\/span> both<\/span> or<\/span>ganizational<\/span> conceptualizations<\/span> of<\/span> performati<\/span>vity<\/span> and anal<\/span>ysis<\/span> of<\/span> ho<\/span>w<\/span> perf<\/span>ormati<\/span>vity<\/span> is<\/span> org<\/span>anized.<\/span> Ultimatel<\/span>y<\/span>,<\/span> the<\/span> authors\u2019<\/span> aim<\/span> is<\/span> to<\/span> pr<\/span>o<\/span>v<\/span>oke a<\/span> \u2018perf<\/span>ormati<\/span>v<\/span>e<\/span> turn\u2019<\/span> in<\/span> OMT<\/span> b<\/span>y<\/span> unleashing<\/span> the<\/span> po<\/span>w<\/span>er<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> perf<\/span>ormativity<\/span> concept to g<\/span>enerate ne<\/span>w and str<\/span>ong<\/span>er org<\/span>anizational theories.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
